Year 5
Welcome Eagles, Owls, Penguins and Swallows
Happy New Year and welcome back! We hope you had a wonderful break.
We have an exciting Spring term planned for you and many lessons to look forward to. In English, we will explore poetry and poetic features with the poems, ‘Goodnight Stroud’ and ‘Last Night I Saw the City Breathing’. In addition to this, we will be studying the novels ‘The Adventures of Odysseus’, an action-packed book based on Greek mythology, and ‘This is NOT a fairy tale’ by the well-known author, Jeremy Strong. In mathematics, we will continue to consolidate on our previous learning and pay particular attention to applying our mathematical skills to word problems and problem-solving activities. In science, we will study ‘Forces’ and ‘Earth and Space’, both fascinating topics we know you will thoroughly enjoy. Our topic this term is ‘North America’ and we will be exploring the geographical, historical, social and cultural differences within the continent and in particular, the USA. Our cross-curricular topic will involve learning across a range of subjects including history, geography, art, design technology and music. We cannot wait to get started!
Year 5 pupils are expected to complete the following homework each week:
-Read daily for at least 15 minutes and have their planners signed. This includes at the weekend.
-Learn spellings that will be given on a Monday and tested on a Friday (these are listed below on this page).
-Complete allocated pages in the CGP Mathematics, Grammar and Comprehension books.
-Regularly use of Times Table Rockstars.
-Complete your weekly allocated Reading Plus tasks (if you do not complete your six assigned tasks whilst at school each week).
There are also extension activities available on this page if you wish to complete them (this is optional).
Each child has been given a password for Mathletics, Reading Plus and Times Table Rockstars and these can be found at the front of their planner. If for any reason these are not working, please let us know and we will fix them for you.
Alongside your assigned homework, it is always useful to consolidate your learning by completing extra activities. There are some really useful websites for you to do this on the 'useful links' page on the 'Year Group Pages' section of the website.
We are very much looking forward to the term ahead!
Best wishes,
Mr Jones, Miss Hyland, Mrs Seymour, Mrs Mulvihill and Mrs Sharma.
